Phoenix sweep to PSL title
Detroit Renaissance repeats as Public School League champions
Detroit Renaissance won its fourth-straight Detroit Public School League volleyball championship, beating rival Detroit Cass Technical in straight sets on Friday, Oct. 27, at Detroit Mumford.
Renaissance won the match 25-21, 25-20, and 25-17.
Senior Brooklyn Jones led Renaissance with 11 kills.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the third set, senior Hailey Yopp served 10 straight points, including four aces, to put Renaissance ahead 12-2. Cass Tech was not able to get close than within five points the rest of the set.
Detroit Western International beat Mumford 3-1 in the consolation game. Renaissance hosts the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 District 22 tournament. Renaissance (12-8-1) opens against Mumford (9-4) on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
Cass Tech plays in the District 24 tournament hosted by Detroit Martin Luther King Jr. Cass Tech (10-7) has a first-round bye and will face the winner of Monday's Oct. 30, Hamtramck-Grosse Pointe North district opener in the semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 1. King will face the winner of the Grosse Pointe South-Detroit Western opener in the semifinals.
