Seniors Discover Opportunities with Detroit Promise
As the Randolph seniors gathered in the multipurpose room with little idea of what to expect, only knowing someone from Detroit Promise would be presenting. They soon discovered the program offers a last-dollar scholarship, ensuring eligible Detroit residents can attend college or technical school tuition-free. Covering associate, bachelor’s degrees, and technical certificates, the Detroit Promise bridges financial gaps after federal aid is applied, making higher education accessible to all. Students were encouraged to check that their desired programs are Pell-eligible, as only those can be funded.
The presentation also highlighted the Detroit Promise Path, a mentorship program assigning Campus Coaches to community college students to support their academic journeys. Established in 2011 and expanded in 2016 to include bachelor’s degrees, the Detroit Promise is funded by the Michigan Education Excellence Foundation and supported by Detroit’s Promise Zone Authority. This initiative has inspired students by removing financial barriers and offering a clear pathway to achieving their dreams, whether through college or technical training.
