Middle Schoolers Take Flight at Detroit City Airport

Middle school students took learning to new heights this week during a hands-on field trip to Coleman A. Young International Airport on Conner and Gratiot.

At the airport, students explored the world of aviation up close—meeting real-life engineers and pilots, trying out flight simulators, and even getting the chance to fly drones. From virtual takeoffs to behind-the-scenes looks at aircraft operations, the experience gave students a deeper understanding of how planes are built, flown, and maintained.

The day was packed with discovery, excitement, and inspiration. Students left the airport buzzing with curiosity and new ideas about careers in aviation and engineering.

It was an unforgettable field trip that brought science and technology to life in the most exciting way—right on the runway.
