Ladies, Start Your Engines!
Add automotive engineering to Brownie Damaris Z.’s list of interests: soccer, basketball, and visiting waterparks. Nine-year-old Damaris of Detroit, is one of four Girl Scouts from across the country who were randomly selected by Ford to race their derby cars live on NBC’s Today Show in New York City today! The Girl Scouts raced the cars they engineered for the 2016 Girls’ Fast Track Races, Powered by Ford. They even got a chance to meet NASCAR driver Danica Patrickon the set while they raced their engineering masterpieces!
Damaris was one of more than 200 GSSEM Brownies and Juniors who went through weeks of hands-on lessons in aerodynamics, friction, weight distribution and design from female Ford engineers. The Girl Scouts competed at the Girls’ Fast Track Races, powered by Ford at Oakland University last October.
It was hard to miss Damaris’ lightning fast car on Friday: Her car was sparkly purple with bright pink stripes and triple exhaust pipes in the back! Damaris, and all of the girls, also received $5,000 scholarships from Ford to pursue their STEAM (aka science, technology, engineering, arts and math) educations!
The appearance on the Today Show was an exhibition of Girls’ Fast Track Races, Powered by Ford. The partnership with Ford is another way that GSSEM is able bring STEAM experiences to more girls.
Go, Damaris, go!!
