Family Pumpkin Carving Night at Garvey
Parent Engagement in Schools is defined as parents and school staff working together to support and improve the learning, development, and health of children and adolescents. Parent engagement in schools is a shared responsibility in which schools and other community agencies and organizations are committed to reaching out to engage parents in meaningful ways, and parents are committed to actively support their children’s and adolescents’ learning and development. This relationship between schools and parents cuts across and reinforces children’s health and learning in multiple settings—at home, in school, in out-of-school programs, and in the community. Engaging parents in their children’s school life is a promising protective factor.
At Marcus Garvey Academy we are committed to providing opportunities for Family Engagement. Marcus Garvey Academy hosted our first of many Family Nights for the 2021-2022 school year on Wednesday, October 27th. Students, parents, and staff enjoyed an evening of carving and decorating pumpkins while feasting on donuts and drinking apple cider. As you walked through our Harambee Center you could hear children laughing or oohing as they removed the "guts" of pumpkins. The wise voices of mothers and fathers could also be heard guiding their children while they carved their pumpkins. Most visibly seen was parents and teachers working together with children.
