The Rodney Whitaker Group Brings the Spirit of Jazz to Frederick Douglass Academy
Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men was filled with rhythm, energy, and inspiration on Monday, October 27, 2025, as the Rodney Whitaker Group, in partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center, brought their signature sound and storytelling to the school’s auditorium.
This special visit was part of the ensemble’s ongoing collaboration with Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), where the band travels to different schools twice a year to share the rich legacy and living art of jazz with Detroit students. Each performance is more than a concert—it’s a lesson in history, culture, and creativity.
Led by world-renowned bassist and educator Rodney Whitaker, the group’s performance blended classic jazz standards with engaging conversations about the roots of the music, the importance of improvisation, and the power of artistic expression. Students learned how jazz has influenced generations of musicians and continues to serve as a bridge between cultures and communities.
The visit provided Frederick Douglass Academy scholars—many of whom are part of the school’s NAF Academy of Engineering and GIS/Drone pathways—with a chance to experience firsthand how dedication, teamwork, and creativity come together to create something extraordinary. Teachers and students alike were captivated by the musicians’ technical skill and passion.
Dr. Willie White, Principal of Frederick Douglass Academy, shared his appreciation for the visit, noting that “exposure to live performances like this enriches our students’ education in ways that go far beyond the classroom. It shows them that excellence, discipline, and artistry can take many forms.”
As the final notes echoed through the auditorium, students gave a standing ovation—proof that the language of jazz remains timeless and that opportunities like these continue to inspire Detroit’s next generation of leaders, thinkers, and artists.
The Rodney Whitaker Group and Jazz at Lincoln Center will continue their musical journey across DPSCD schools, keeping the heartbeat of jazz alive and thriving in Detroit’s classrooms.
