ICYMI: DPSCD Football is Rising!
Editors Update Thursday, November 17, 2022:
Congratulations to both Cass Tech and King football teams for advancing to the state playoff semi-finals on the weekend of November 18 and November 19.
Cass Tech will play Belleville in the Division 1 semi-final at 7 p.m.on Friday, November 18. The game will be played at Novi High School in Novi and will be broadcast on Bally Sports Detroit. Meanwhile, King will battle Mason on Saturday, November 19 at 1 p.m. The game will be played at Westland John Glenn High School.
Today (11-2-22), we sat down with our Executive Director of Athletics, James Alexander, as several Detroit Public Schools Community District football teams progress through the state championship playoffs. We want the inside scoop, who to watch and his predictions:
Q: Coach Alexander, is that what they call you?
A: The student athletes call me Mr. Alexander and the coaches call me coach because of my former life as a coach.
Q: Give us a summary of the season's highlights?
A: Our football season was filled with outstanding highlights. In our Blue Division, we saw Ford, East English, Denby and Renaissance up their game and have better seasons this year than in previous years. The Cass and King rivalry did not disappoint. King beat Cass at Cass to earn bragging rights in the regular season. Cass then defeated King for the PSL City Championship that was held at Wayne State University in front of 4,500 fans.
Q: Who should we keep our eye on as the next Detroit Great?
A: There are a few, but definitely #1 Corey Sadler Jr. @ Cass Tech. He has been sensational on both sides of the ball and has produced big numbers as a freshman. Also, #9 Daion Johnson @ King and Shawntez Bowie Jr. @ Denby.
Q: And are you willing to share any predictions?
A: I'm predicting the PSL teams Cass, King and Central will go far in the ongoing Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) state tournament. All three teams are positioned to make it to Ford Field at the end of the month!
Q: Any last words or trash talk you'd like us to repeat?
A: This is a great time to be a student at DPSCD, as well as a Public School League (PSL) athlete. We have lots of competitive schools, and the PSL continues to be one of the best athletic leagues in the state!
