DPSCD’s Commitment to Whole Child Health Expands
As the Whole Child Commitment initiative continues to expand to new heights, Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) is now offering additional services of after school programs and COVID-19 booster.
Expansion of after school programming
Partnering with organizations like Developing K.I.D.S, Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, Blue Car and Urban Neighborhood Initiatives, DPSCD is piloting an after school initiative in which families will have access to a full suite of after school programs. Participating schools include Thirkell, Ronald Brown, Gompers, Mackenzie, Munger, Emerson, Hamilton, Dixon/Ann Arbor at Dixon, Earhart/Maybury at Earhart, JR King/Coleman Young at JR King. We are excited to bring these activities to our students.
In addition, DPSCD is excited to launch Student-Led Clubs at all DPSCD high schools this winter. Through this opportunity, students will be able to develop ideas for enrichment clubs.
Expanded physical and behavioral health services
DPSCD continues to staff one nurse at every school to support students’ physical health needs, and one behavioral health clinician at every school to provide behavioral health and wellness needs. Through DPSCD’s partnership with the Detroit Health Department and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, our schools are offering COVID-19 vaccinations, including the new booster shot.
DPSCD’s behavioral health services are provided in partnership with trusted community partners with extensive experience serving the behavioral health needs of children. DPSCD is also partnering with TRAILS, a program that provides an evidence-based curriculum, training and support to our behavioral health partners and counselors. DPSCD’s commitment to behavioral health will now extend to family members as well. Any adult family member of a DPSCD student may access free behavioral health case management and intake services through The Children’s Center at our Family Resource Distribution Center (16164 Asbury Park) from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
The Whole Child Commitment is an integral part of the 2023 Strategic Plan and a priority that continues to prove beneficial for the whole family. For more information, please visit https://www.detroitk12.org/families
