Dear Parents/Guardians

An Apple

March 22, 2021

Dear Parent/Guardians:

The Detroit Public Schools Community District is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students.  In order to ensure that all students remain safe and secure in school as well as at home, for the month of April, the district is planning a series of engagement sessions for students and parents around the topic of mental health and suicide prevention and awareness for 3rd – 12th grade students.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people between 10 to 24. In response to this data, School Counselors and/or Social Workers will conduct school-wide presentations and classroom discussions around this topic.

Specific content will include:

  • Defining suicide
  • Facts about suicide
  • Mobile and online safety
  • Resources for parents and students

Please begin speaking with your child about the topic of suicide as well as the upcoming school-based presentations. For resources, please visit www.afsp.org.

Additional resource:

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK [8255]) is a United States-based suicide prevention network of 161 crisis centers that provides a 24/7, toll-free hotline available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.
