Emagine Theater Field Trip

On, Friday, February 14, 2020, Detroit Lions Academy students were treated to a free viewing of the film, Harriet, at the Emagine Royal Oak Theater. Students enjoyed free popcorn, pizza and soft drinks while relaxing in luxury recliners. They were not at all prepared for this film's emotional journey back into time. The film showcased the life of female abolitionist, Harriet Tubman. It was a stroy of profound strength and courage. You could hear the students gasping with disbelief as they watched. Watching her life story unfold on the big screen, painted a vivid picture of the pain, sacrifice and struggle that African Americans had to endure. The film sparked conversations on the bus ride home. It reminded us of a time when black people were denied basic human rights.

Without the contributions of African Americans this country would be far less improved than it is today. Thankfully times are continuously changing for the better. Today students are able to obtain a high quality education in Detroit Public Schools Community District that offers equal education to all students. Students rise. We all rise.
