2020 Tech Slam
DETROIT BASKETBALL! What does technology and STEM have to do with sports? Students from Detroit Public Schools Community District were challenged with finding the answer to that question.
When students stepped foot on the practice court at the new Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center, Wednesday, January 29, 2020 they had no idea what was in store for them. The Detroit Pistons, in partnership with Rocket Fiber., hosted Tech Slam 2020. This spectacular event showed students how technology and STEM influence the world of sports through a hands-on experience. Students attended workshops and participated in activities focusing on health, material science, computer technology and virtual reality. Google, TEAM Inc., and the Hidden Genius Project were among those that pitched in to make this event a success. There was never a dull moment. You could see the students' enthusiasm. Their interests were sparked. Some students were even able to access a part of themselves that seemed lost, their imaginations.
Each student at Tech Slam 2020 walked away with something. It may have been a t-shirt, or a message. Many of the students were surprised to find out that the world of sports is made up of more than the athletes that play the game. They could have learned about a new mentoring group like TEAM Inc. Others walked away with a new idea or inspiration. Tech Slam was an opportunity for DPSCD students in grades 7-10 to come together to share knowledge, explore talent and experience new things. The field trip supported our district's mission of educating and empowering every student.
We want to thank the Detroit Pistons for extending the invitation and for treating our students to a wonderful experience!
