Do You Know Your Rights?

Not everyone feels comfortable interacting with the police. Many of us are unaware of what our rights are when confronted by the police. Tuesday, December 17, 2019, Erin Keith and staff from the Detroit Justice Center, came to share valuable knowledge with Detroit Lions Academy students, staff, and select Detroit Lions NFL players.

Erin Keith is a Staff Attorney for Youth Legal Services and Empowerment. Ms. Keith's presentation identified and demonstrated the five levels of police interaction (contact, frisk, consent to search, stop, arrest). The presentation also highlighted the do's and don'ts for police interaction, as well as magic phrases to use when you find yourself interacting with the police. Erin Keith had everyone's attention. Everyone listening, at one point or another, had a moment when they thought, "Wow, I did not know that." The presentation was concluded with a quiz. Teams of staff, students and Detroit Lions players were trying to come up with the correct answers for their team.

We would like to thank Erin Keith and the Detroit Justice Center for sharing these valuable tips with us. Knowing our rights and how to handle police interactions could be the difference between a positive or negative outcome. In worse cases it could be the difference between life, death or unjust treatment.
