DPSCD’s Whole Child Commitment priority provides opportunities for our students to rise in the classroom, on the court, on stage, as well as through leadership programming, garnished with consistent social-emotional support, so our students feel loved, challenged, and prepared. Another result of DPSCD’s whole child approach is the rise of DPSCD students who participate on their District chess teams and/or in chess clubs.
“Playing chess develops critical thinking skills that include problem solving, patience and sportsmanship, along with becoming a strategic thinker,” said Kevin Fite, DPSCD’s Assistant Director of Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). He would know. Coach Fite is an ardent teacher and leader of chess. “We continue to see a growing interest in chess among children in our district and community, which is why we encourage our students to incorporate chess into their STEM related studies,” said Fite. “Our success as a district is getting noticed.” Indeed, it is.
At the recent All- City Chess Team Awards, held at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), DPSCD chess players dominated the teams with 39 players making either the Dream team, (1st or 2nd team) high school, middle, elementary and primary teams. The Dream Team captain was Cass Technical High School junior Charisse Woods, who said, “chess has made the most positive impact on my life. It has allowed me to travel to 12 states and five countries, including representing Detroit on the world chess stage in Greece and India.”
