Measurement and Caramel Apples

The opportunity for Ms. Smith's students to relate measurement to a real life experience occurred before the Thanksgiving break. The students had to use their multiplication, critical thinking and measurement skills to make caramel from scratch using a recipe. The students removed the wax from the apples, inserted the sticks and dipped the apple into the caramel. In addition, they had to read the candy thermometer to determine the correct consistency of the caramel. To extend the activity, the students dressed the caramel apples with decadent toppings such as, oreos, pretzels and M&M's
