Ben Carson High School Senior Celebrates Ivy League Acceptance
After four years of hard work and determination, Ben Carson High School of Science and Medicine senior Rachel Kabala has thrived. She recently received her acceptance letter from her dream school, Dartmouth College, of the prestigious Ivy League. She will be attending Dartmouth on a full-ride scholarship.
Despite learning through the challenges of the pandemic for much of her time in high school, Rachel excelled, whether in the classroom, learning online and by participating in numerous leadership activities, including the District’s Teens for Vaccine initiative.
While maintaining a near 4.0 grade point average, a sampling of her leadership activities while at Ben Carson includes: President, Youth Advisory Council, Battalion Commander Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC), leader in the National Honor Society and the Diversity Club, as well as participating in numerous other community service activities. Rachel’s actions in serving others have been geared toward promoting healthful practices in the lives of her classmates and teens through Engineering and Medicine. In 2021, she served as one of the leaders in DPSCD’s successful Teens for Vaccines initiative.
“It is important for me to promote healthful lives among teens because WE are the future, the future is US, and we hold it in OUR hands,” she said. “Promoting a healthy lifestyle within teens will insure a healthy and promising tomorrow as young Black Americans.”
As for earning her way into Dartmouth, according to its website, Rachel’s application was "among a total of 28,336 that Dartmouth received for the Class of 2026.” The volume of applicants was particularly impressive given the uncertainty of college admissions with the pandemic. It is further testament to Rachel’s academic and service achievements that her application stood out.
“The acceptance rate for the Dartmouth class of 2026 was just above six percent,” said Lee Coffin, Vice Provost of Enrollment and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Dartmouth. “We tied the mark set last year by the Class of ’25 as the most selective admission cycle in the College’s history.”
Rachel’s acceptance into Dartmouth is also another feather in Ben Carson’s cap as well. In 2021, another Ben Carson senior, Mahbuba Sumiya, earned a full-ride scholarship to Harvard University, another prestigious Ivy League school.
