BCHS Counselor Recognized as Exemplary School Counselor
School counselor Rakiba Mitchell has been working at Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine for this past school year.
Her former counselee Briana Mason who was the 2011 Class Salutatorian at M. L. King High School nominated her as an exemplary Professional School Counselor for the 2019 College Board Counselor Recognition Program. It was with Ms. Mitchell's assistance that Mason received a scholarship to attend Howard University. Throughout her matriculation, Ms. Mitchell served as her mentor. Ms. Mitchell remembers one of the most beautiful moments was when she was present as she became a member of her own sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. She considers it a true honor to now call her soror (sister).
Ms. Mitchell helps students rise by assisting them to achieve their greater purpose. She believes that every student was born on purpose with purpose. She supports their dreams/desires/interests, helps to create career paths and provides access to resources. One resource that she felt was lacking was access to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) because she discovered that students were extremely unfamiliar and being that there are over one hundred HBCUs these were lost opportunities. HBC&U Legacies, her LLC, was established in July of 2017 specifically for the purpose of promoting HBCUs as viable options for students. Those involved is a team of educators (all of whom are products of Detroit Public Schools) who facilitate the HBCU dialogue at various schools, institutions, conferences, and events across the nation.
Mitchell received a lapel pin and a letter of recognition during National School Counseling Week from College Board. It’s an honor to highlight the important work of innovative, results-oriented counselors who are committed to student success and opportunity.
In addition to receiving the lapel pin and letter of recognition, the counselor will also be profiled on the College Board website, and a notification of their accomplishment will be sent to their nominator, superintendent and principal.
