BCHS Chess Team on to Nationals
The BCHS chess team competes in the Detroit Metro Scholastic Chess League which is open to all schools in the Detroit city limits public or private 1-12. DMSCL this year added U of D Jesuit academy and high school to enrich chess competition within the league. Tournament Teams consist of 5 players with strongest to weakest players on boards 1 through 5 after the first five boards extra games are played with the remaining participants, which if games are won add to the team's point totals which is used if there is a possible tie situation.
This year's BCHS chess team had 7-10 participants and was split with 3 experienced players Canaan Thomas, Eddie Echols, Jhlen Simpson and the remaining students Amayra Hill, Makayla Slater, Shantoria Rice, Joshua Hines, Kier Woodfolk, Irealle Williams, Javon Cross, Kenneth Long Jr. (who were first time chess players just learning the game at the start of this school year). BCHS suprised the league with our dedicated students. Pur team did beat some well established teams and finished in fourth place in the league, allowing the school to represent the district nationally along with Cass Tech and Rennasiance.
