Updated Quarantine Guidelines October 27, 2021

October 27, 2021

DPSCD Staff and Families,

Please be advised that the quarantine period for unvaccinated close contacts, employees or students, will be 7-10 days. Please note that this revision does not change the required 10 days of isolation for COVID positive individuals, regardless of vaccination status. This update is being implemented through the guidance of the Detroit Health Department.

Close Contact with Negative COVID test result= Return on Day 8

Unvaccinated asymptomatic close contacts may return on Day 8 of the quarantine period if they have a negative COVID result that was collected on Day 5, 6 or 7 of the quarantine.

Close Contact with No COVID test result= Return on Day 11

If an individual does not test, then they may return on Day 11, following 10 days of quarantine, provided they have not developed symptoms.  Between days 7-14, the individual should wear a mask indoors in public, and continue to self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms.

Who are close contacts?

  • For students in a classroom setting: Close Contacts include anyone who is within 3 feet of the COVID positive student for 15 minutes or longer over a 24-hour period, starting 3 days prior to symptoms or positive result, whichever is first.
  • For adults in the classroom setting and all individuals in any space outside of a classroom:  Close Contacts include anyone who is within 6 feet of the COVID positive individual for 15 minutes or longer over a 24-hour period starting 3 days prior to symptoms or positive result, whichever is first.
  • Anyone who lives in the same household as the COVID positive individual

Please continue to monitor symptoms, participate in weekly COVID testing and report positive COVID cases to your direct supervisor as soon as you become aware.  Supervisors have been given directions to submit the COVID survey to the Office of School Health and Wellness as soon as they receive notice.  We then immediately direct close contacts to quarantine according to the guidance listed above.  After additional follow up is completed by the Office of School Health and Wellness, a notification letter and robocall are sent to the school community to provide general awareness.  At the time that the general notice is shared, all close contacts have already been identified and directed to quarantine and the notice is being shared as general notification.  Cases are then posted on our COVID 19 Website detroitk12.org/covid19.

Sincerely,

Dr. Nikolai P. Vitti, Ed.D.
