Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) joined by partners Stellantis, and the City of Detroit (Detroit at Work) announced the completion of Phase 1 of the new Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy at Southeastern High School, an education-career pathway program, which enables students to jump-start their careers in advanced manufacturing. DPSCD Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti, City of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Christine Estereicher, Director State Relations, Civic Engagement and External Affairs of Stellantis and Southeastern Principal Maurice El-Amin discussed the Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy during an online press conference today (April 21, 2021).
Launched at the beginning of the 2020 fall semester, the Advanced Manufacturing Academy provides students an education-career pathway to the manufacturing industry, enhancing career opportunities and helping to secure the community’s future. The first phase of this unique and competitive programming enrolled more than 200 ninth-grade students.
The program, bolstered by a $4 million investment from Stellantis, exposes students to high-growth, high-demand careers in manufacturing, many of which are available throughout Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Each course will offer industry certifications that students can acquire upon completion of the career pathway program.
For phase two, a new tenth-grade course will begin in the fall 2021 semester. It will ensure that students engaged this year will continue their Advanced Manufacturing pathway experience.
A driving force in the partnership has been the city’s Detroit At Work initiative. Whether through job readiness events, messaging, or creating a future talent pipeline by supporting the Advanced Manufacturing Academy, the City of Detroit has brought hope to thousands of Detroiters, be they adults or District students, seeking career opportunities in the growing field of advanced manufacturing.
