Students Rise with Manufacturing Day
Manufacturing Day takes place throughout several counties in Michigan and connects with Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) middle school, high school and adult education students. Manufacturing Day provides an opportunity for students to explore hundreds of career tracks that fall under the manufacturing umbrella.
More than 1,000 DPSCD students visited organizations throughout Metro Detroit to learn about manufacturing and technology jobs. Of those students, many attended DiverseNote, a recruiting agency, to assist students with job applications, resume workshops and more.
Tyrieke Wesley, 21, is a current college student who graduated from the Adult Education East Campus in 2016. Wesley credits Manufacturing Day to widening the horizon for students, including himself, who are looking for a fun and exciting career path.
“I just got off work, but I made it here,” said Wesley. “I’ve been planning for Manufacturing Day all year.”
Pershing High School Senior LaZae Mosley says that even if a university setting is not for her, she will still have the insight on manufacturing and construction. She has had the opportunity to work with masonry through Randolph Career and Technical Center.
“I liked building things and working with my hands,” said Mosely. She hopes Manufacturing Day can connect her with companies as she grows in the field.
Teachers also play an important role in Manufacturing Day. Audrean Williams is an instructor at Adult Education East, she engages in testing and registration with students. Williams shares that she sees her students gaining the knowledge and skills needed to implement technology in various ways.
“Students don’t have enough exposure to different realms of technology, so Manufacturing Day gives them those things.” said Williams.
She wants her students to know that there are more interfaces of technology they can learn about in more detail during Manufacturing Day. With students and their instructors working together to be active during Manufacturing Day different companies open their doors for students to have hands on learning and engagement. After the introduction of DiverseNote recruiting, students were free to break out into small group sessions to learn together and see what likes and dislikes they come across in their field of work.
