Adult Education Center West Campus Selected as DPSCD Family-Community Hub

Detroit Public Schools Community District's Adult Education Centers will provide far more than just diploma and GED completion.

On Dec. 13, a press conference was held at the Adult Education-West Campus to announce that both it and the East Campus will also become centralized Family and Community Hubs for the district.

The district will partner with various agencies to provide wrap-around services, including tutoring, parenting classes, food and clothing donation, and activities for both adult and child learners at those buildings.  Among those agencies are:

  • Accounting Aids Society
  • Black Mothers Breast Feeding
  • Detroit Health Department
  • Detroit Land Bank
  • Detroit Parent Network
  • Detroit Training Center
  • Doors of Success
  • Dress for Success
  • Focus Hope
  • Forgotten Harvest
  • Western Michigan University

The West Campus welcomed DPSCD Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti as he announced the creation of the hubs.  The classes will begin on Jan. 8, after the return from the holiday break.

"This not only helps use underutilized space, but can also help with a one-stop shopping benefit for adult and child learners," he stated at the conference.

Two West Campus students, Sheila Jones and Iesha Spencer, also addressed the large crowd to explain the benefits of the services and how it could apply to them as students.

"It will be great to have everything here," said Spencer, who has children attending district schools.  She is currently attending the homeowner workshop offered through the Detroit Land Bank.

"I haven't taken the parenting classes yet, but I'm looking forward to them," she said.

"The program here is very enlightening," Jones said.  "I believe that what this school is offering is the best thing a parent can have.  Dr. Willis and the staff are wonderful."

The agencies will lease space in the first floor of the West Campus, while academic courses going toward High School Completion, Adult Basic Education and GED preparation will be conducted on the second.
