Thirkell Scholars Shine at Their First Academic Games Tournament

Thirkell Elementary-Middle School students proudly represented their school at their very first Academic Games Tournament, showcasing teamwork, focus, and critical thinking as “Detroit’s Next Legends.”

Held at a local DPSCD host site, the event brought together students from across the district to compete in challenging rounds that tested logic, strategy, and knowledge. Dressed in their custom black hoodies with the inspiring slogan “Home of Detroit’s Next Legends,” Thirkell’s Academic Games team demonstrated confidence, collaboration, and Jaguar pride from start to finish.

Throughout the day, students worked together in teams, discussing strategies, solving problems, and supporting one another with enthusiasm and determination. The competition wasn’t just about winning—it was about learning how to think critically, communicate effectively, and persevere under pressure.

“Our students showed incredible effort and focus,” said one Thirkell staff member. “This experience gave them a chance to challenge themselves academically and see that learning can be exciting and competitive at the same time.”

The Academic Games program encourages students to use higher-order thinking skills through games like Equations, On-Sets, and LinguiShtik, all designed to make learning fun and intellectually rewarding.

Thirkell extends a special thank you to the staff, coaches, and families who supported the team’s preparation and participation. This milestone marks the beginning of a bright new chapter for Thirkell’s scholars—a team ready to grow, compete, and continue proving why they’re truly Detroit’s next legends.
