Road and Bicycle Safety Program
Second grade students participated in the Road & Bicycle Safety Program sponsored by the Detroit Red Wings and Chevrolet. Mrs. Author (the P.E... teacher) implemented the program as part of her P.E.. curriculum. The Detroit Public Schools Community District selected the program as a pathway to help fulfill their commitment to the whole child.
The second graders learned how to ride a bicycle safely and were given the opportunity to practice riding in an organized community ride. The students learned road safety, including: how to perform a bike check, how to properly fit a helmet, proper hand signals, and to identify road signs.
At the culminating event hosted by members of the Detroit Red Wings as well as Deputy Superintendent Iranetta Wright and Alycia Meriweather, the students were able to share what they learned while in P.E.. class. The students were able to witness and practice using bike safety rules while listening to the two defensive players from the Detroit Red Wings share their childhood experience while biking. They also participated in a Q & A with the defensive Red Wing players.
The second grade students at Ronald Brown were amazed and astonished when it was announced that they would all receive their own bike to ride at home and to school. The students jaws dropped in awe when their bikes were displayed on the jumbo-tron. Happy riding second graders! Be safe, follow the rules, and always wear your helmet!
