DPSCD Celebrates First Day of School

An array of excitement and emotions were felt and seen across each school today from hugs, fist bumps, high fives and cheers as students and teachers celebrated the first day of school at Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD).

At the Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural School (FLICS), students were processing foreign language in Spanish and Japanese on the first day as if they had been working on these languages all year. Meanwhile, at Durfee Middle-Elementary, students were greeted by the cheers of several partner organizations, including the Detroit Pistons mascot Hooper, as well as members of their dance team. And the day was just getting started!

DPSCD Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti and Board President Angelique Peterson-Mayberry, on behalf of the entire Board of Education, visited Mark Twain, they greeted teachers and students, encouraging them to be in school on time and ready to learn. Students shared their get acquainted activities and demonstrated what they did over the summer. At the Detroit School of Arts (DSA), the leadership team engaged freshmen during a student assembly.

Today was a great kickoff to the 22-23 school year as DPSCD started school a week earlier than previous years. Dr. Vitti said this year there will be a focus on addressing chronic absenteeism without the distraction of the pandemic and interruptions due to quarantining.
