Homebound and Hospitalized Instruction

Homebound and Hospitalized Instruction helps students stay connected to learning when a medical condition prevents them from attending school in person for a period of time. These services are provided when a medical doctor, doctor of osteopathic medicine, or physician’s assistant confirms that a student is unable to attend school during the regular school day.

Students continue working on their school assignments through a guided, independent learning program, with instruction coordinated between the homebound teacher and the student’s classroom teachers to ensure continuity with grade-level coursework.

Instruction typically includes:

  • At least two instructional sessions per week, as required by the Michigan Department of Education
  • Sessions that support the student’s academic progress while allowing for rest and recovery

If a student receives related services (such as therapy or other supports), those services may continue as appropriate. However, related services do not replace academic instruction.

The goal of Homebound and Hospitalized Instruction is to support students academically while prioritizing their health, and to help them transition back to school when they are medically able.
