Summer Discovery - Limited Spots - Register Today

June 22, 2026 - July 24, 2026

Summer Discovery will provide currently enrolled students and incoming kindergarten students with an opportunity to participate in academic recovery, Acceleration and Enrichment experiences, as well as Recreational Activities. Students are automatically assigned to their summer school site based on the school they are currently enrolled in, with adjustments for exceptional student education participants. Transportation and meals will be provided for all eligible students.

New this year: To register for Summer Discovery 2026, families will receive a unique enrollment link for each student. The link will be sent directly to the parent/guardian email on file—no student email login or password required. Just click the link to enroll.

If you do not receive the link, please contact your home school to update your contact information or download the paper enrollment form and submit it to your home school.

If your student has an IEP, please note that their site assignment may change. If you are assigned to a new site, you will be notified by your child's ESE Teacher of their updated summer school placement.

Rising K-8 Programming Overview

Students in grades Rising K-8 will attend Summer Discovery in-person at their assigned school locations. Students will be able to explore
skills and interests, including STEM, performing and visual arts, academic enrichment, and physical fitness in a camp-like atmosphere. Meals (breakfast and lunch) will be provided for students. Our course offerings will focus on supporting students to get a jumpstart on their next academic year and/or take academic credit recovery courses so that they can stay on-track to graduation. Additionally, we have partnered with Community-Based Organizations to provide summer programming services to promote the physical and emotional well-being of students and families. Details on these offerings can be found below. Transportation will be provided for all eligible students to/from a host site within proximity of their home school. Student transportation will be corner stops only.

Academic Credit Recovery is available for certain high school students and will be accessed virtually. If in-person support is needed, students are welcome to go to the school building to meet with their instructor from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Transportation will not be provided for high school students because they are considered "Virtual Learners" during the summer. If a high school student needs to come on-site for support, bus passes will be available.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Summer School?
Summer School starts Monday, June 22,2026, and ends Friday, July 24, 2026. Summer learning will take place Monday-Friday. ESE Separate Facilities summer learning begins Monday, July 6th, and ends Friday, August 7th.

How will Summer School be offered?
Summer School academics will be offered face-to-face for students in grades Rising K-8. Credit Recovery will be offered virtually for 9-12th grade students, with the opportunity for students to go in-person to school sites if additional support is needed.

How do I enroll my child for Summer School?
Enrollment applications were sent home with students. The Summer School Application is also available here online and may be submitted to your student’s home school or emailed to summerschool.info@detroitk12.org. You can also register your child at their home school. Registration is open now and ends on June 5th.

Will students be provided Breakfast and Lunch at school?
Yes. Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily for students.

Are students eligible for transportation during Summer School?
Transportation will be provided for all eligible Rising K-8 students to a host site within proximity of their home school. Student transportation will be corner stops only.

High school students are “Virtual Learners” during the summer and will not be provided transportation. If a high school student needs to come on-site for support, public bus passes will also be available.

ESE center-based students will also receive transportation.

When is the last day to enroll students for Summer School for academic promotion purposes?
The last day to enroll students online is May 24th. Applications can be completed at students’ home school sites after the enrollment deadline, but this will only guarantee a spot on the waiting list.

If my child is registered for Summer School, how do I know where they will need to go on the first day of Summer School?
Students will receive an assignment letter via their school email the week before summer learning begins. If you do not receive a letter, please contact the HELP DESK (313-240-4377) and they will provide you with the school site location.

What are the attendance expectations for students throughout Summer School?
Students in grades Rising K-8 and ESE students are expected to attend in-person classes daily. Students in grades 9th-12th are expected to log on and attend virtually daily for academic advisement. If students fail to meet attendance expectations during summer school, they may be withdrawn.

How do I know my child is registered for the correct required recovery courses?
School Counselors will verify and confirm based on students’ transcripts and IEPs.

How do I select a Summer School Site for a child with an IEP?
Students with eligible IEPs will be automatically enrolled in a summer learning site that matches their ESE program.

How will students be graded in Summer School?
Rising K-8 students will receive a pass or fail. All credit recovery students will receive a letter grade.

What is the discipline expectation for students during Summer Learning?
Disciplinary Reports are required for summer learning. The same offense and violation codes should be used for summer school, as are used during the regular school year. Students who display egregious behavior during Summer School will be withdrawn.
