9th Grade Admissions

Please click the 9th Grade Petition tab on this page to learn about the process for submitting a petition for admission consideration.

The petition application form was sent, via Submittable, to all students who applied in round 1 and took the High School Placement Test. Check your email or log into Submittable for more details.

This web page is for students who are in 8th grade and will begin high school in Fall 2026. If the student is already in high school, click here. 

Important Dates

  • Round 1: Closed on Nov. 16, 2025
  • Round 1 Decision Date: Jan. 23, 2026
     
  • Round 2: 12 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 - 11:59 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2026
  • Round 2 Decision Date: June 5, 2026

    Update: There will be no Round 3 for the 2025-26 admission cycle. All applications must be received by May 1, 2026 and all exams must be taken by the end of Round 2.

9th Grade Application for Fall 2026


Application Requirements

Submissions must include the following:

  • A student essay based on the prompts in the application
  • Two complete years of academic records
    • This is not required for continuously enrolled DPSCD students
  • Three references. The application will only collect contact information. Letters of recommendation are not required for the initial application and will not be reviewed.
  • If applicable: IEP/NPSP/504 Plan and/or WIDA scores if the student may be eligible for exam accommodations.

Application Scoring

The exam is scored independently by the test provider, Scholastic Testing Services. Each student-authored essay is reviewed by two or more independent reviewers. The average of the essay reviews serves as the student's final score. Rubrics are used to assign points to the interest letter and grade point average.

Application Guidelines

Submitting Your Application

  • Applications are accepted online only, via Submittable.
  • The application must be completed by a parent or guardian, using their email address. 
  • Do not apply using a school email account or a student's personal email address.
  • All deadlines are firm and final. This applies to the application, requests for information, petitions and, if applicable, enrollment.

Editing Your Application

  • Applicants may save the application in progress and return to make as many changes as necessary prior to submitting it.
  • Do not submit more than one application for the same student. Duplicate applications will be withdrawn. If you need to update your application, you may email exam.schools@detroitk12.org or use Submittable to send a message to the Admissions Team to request the opportunity to edit or update your application after it has been submitted.
