DSA Pathways

Metro Detroit’s Premier Public Arts Pathway

At Detroit Public Schools Community District, creativity shines bright! Through the Detroit School of Arts (DSA) Pathways initiative, students in grades 6–12 can explore their passions, build confidence, and grow their talents in a supportive, inspiring environment. This unique pathway blends strong academics with exceptional arts instruction and connects students with professional artists through hands-on experiences like residencies, master classes, and workshops.

From first notes and brushstrokes to polished performances, DPSCD’s arts pathway helps students turn creativity into confidence—and dreams into possibility.

Start the Journey Early: Middle School Arts Conservatories (Grades 6–8)

Students can begin discovering and developing their artistic talents at one of DPSCD’s middle school arts conservatories, each offering exciting opportunities to learn, create, and perform:

  • Brenda Scott Academy for the Arts – A vibrant program featuring Band, Choir, Dance, Digital Media Arts, Theatre, and Visual Art

  • Edward “Duke” Ellington Conservatory of Music & Art at Beckham Academy – A rich, well-rounded experience in Band, Choir, Dance, Orchestra, Theatre, and Visual Art

  • John R. King Academic and Performing Arts Academy – A dynamic blend of Band, Choir, Dance and Orchestra

  • Spain Elementary-Middle School – Creative exploration through Choir, Dance, Theatre, and Visual Art

These schools provide a nurturing space where students can try new art forms, build skills, and discover what they love—all while receiving a strong academic foundation.

Continue the Dream: High School (Grades 9–12)

  • Detroit School of Arts (DSA) – Michigan’s premier public arts high school, located in the heart of Midtown Detroit

To make the transition easy for families, DPSCD offers free bus transportation from each middle school arts conservatory directly to Detroit School of Arts. This ensures students can continue their artistic journey without barriers, surrounded by peers and mentors who share their passion.
