On June 23, 2022, DPSCD will kick off a year-long celebration of the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. This landmark law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs, particularly by offering opportunities in sports, STEM, and CTE fields as well as by prohibiting harassment on the basis of sex or gender-identity.
Title IX came during a time in our country when women were fighting for rights on multiple fronts, including their access to equal opportunity and treatment in schools. There were massive disparities between males and females when considering opportunities in athletics, STEM classes and protections against discriminatory behaviors. As a result, Title IX law was passed stating that: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.“
