      Early Childhood

      The Office of Early Childhood ensures that all children have access to high-quality early learning and development programs and enter kindergarten prepared for success. We ensure that all early childhood outcomes include:

      • Children thriving
      • Children are developmentally ready to succeed in school
      • Children are prepared to succeed by achieving appropriate grade level reading proficiencies

      We provide a free, high-quality early learning experience for students who are 4 years old by December 1st of the current school year in two prekindergarten programs:


      Detroit Public Schools Community District's FREE Public Montessori program is dedicated to the Montessori philosophy. We are strongly invested in creating a unique, student-centered learning environment and helping families nurture respectful, responsible, and resourceful children. Learn about Montessori and the application process here. 

      Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP)

      GSRP is a state-funded pre-K program for four-year-old children. Class sizes range from 16 - 18 students and students meet four day per week (M-TH). The program provides educational, health, mental health, and parental involvement services. Students selected for the Great Start Readiness Program must meet income guidelines. Learn more about GSRP here.

      Four Easy Steps:

      1. Fill out an online Pre-Screen form 
      2. View the DPSCD Pre-K Experience Video for an overview of the program
      3. Gather required documents - see the list below
      4. A DPSCD Pre-K teacher will contact you regarding a virtual family conference to complete and submit a formal application and documentation

      Required Enrollment Documents:
      • Child’s Official Birth Certificate
      • Child’s Immunization Record or Waiver
      • Child’s Health Appraisal 
      • Parent/Guardian ID
      • Parent Proof of Income
