About the Virtual School
Is my student eligible to attend DPSCD’s Virtual School?
We encourage families to only consider the virtual school option if their child was not chronically absent last year and passed all of their second semester courses. If you would like to attend the Virtual School and you were chronically absent or failed one or more classes, you are still eligible to apply. The virtual school does not offer learning center services, specialized programs, or any in-person extracurriculars, such as athletics. If you have any questions about your student’s eligibility, please email virtual.school@detroitk12.org.
If a student has an IEP, they may request an IEP Team Meeting to determine if the student’s individual needs can be met and a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) can be provided in a virtual setting. Please contact your IEP Team Case Manager or call the Office of Exceptional Student Education at 313-873-7740.
If my students attend the Virtual School for 2022-2023, will they have teachers from the school they were in this year?
No. DPSCD offers a dedicated K-12 Virtual School with virtual school staff. These teachers are specific to the virtual school and different from the staff at in-person schools. To ensure adequate staffing across programs in the District, the Virtual School does not offer specialized programs that are present at in-person schools including Career and Technical Education, Montessori and Dual-Language programming.
Will students who attend DPSCD’s Virtual School be able to participate in special programs, afterschool enrichment programs, or athletics?
No. The virtual school does not offer learning center services, specialized programs, or any in-person extracurriculars, such as athletics. Any student who would like to participate in specialized school programs, such as Career Tech Centers, AP/IB, or Montessori, or extracurricular activities, such as athletics or clubs, should enroll for in person instruction at the schools that offer these programs.
I would like to enroll my student in the Virtual School for the beginning of Semester 1 due to health concerns from the pandemic, but I hope to return them to face-to-face learning next school year. Is this possible?
Families’ selections for students will extend through the entire school year. Students who enroll in the District’s virtual school this year will have their spot at their current school saved for the start of the 2022-2023 year, and will be able to return to their current school for in-person instruction during the at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year.
