First Robotics Competition (FRC) Team DSA D-Techs #3632

Detroit School of Arts Robotics Team, D-Techs #3632, was established in 2010. Ms. Rita Davis, the principal at that time, approached Mr. Jimmie Jones, now a retired Science Teacher teacher about creating a team. Mr. Jones created the team with Kevin Hill, Cortez Ellis, Lauren Graves, James Hardy, Shantinique Irby and others. Kevin Hill and Cortez Ellis were the first captains of the team, and responsible for naming the team D-Techs. Mr. Alexander, Math Teacher, and Ms. Moultrie, a retired Math teacher, coached the team with Mr. Jones.

When D-Techs was established, it became part of FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST, based in Manchester, New Hampshire, is the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity which designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-knowledge, and life skills. Dean Kamen, a prolific inventor, entrepreneur, and tirelses advocate for science and technology, is the founder.

In 1992, FIRST began creating competitions in which teams must design and build robots to execute certain tasks in order to score points and win. D-Techs began participating in the 2011 competition. The team would build their robots at the MEZ (Michigan Engineering Zone). Fundraising and state funds helped defray the cost of supplies, materials, and registration for the competitions. These competitions were and are held in Michigan schools.

Mr. Jones retired in 2014. The current lead coach is Karen Lemmons, Library Media Specialist/Computer Applications Educator. Ms. Alyssa Gipson and Mr. Carl Holden co-coach with Ms. Lemmons.
