    Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts of the United States of America, commonly referred to as simply Girl Scouts, is a youth organization for girls in the United States and American girls living abroad. Founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912, it was organized after Ms.Low met Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, in 1911.

The Girl Scouts at Thurgood Marshall are lead by Mrs. Marsha Smith. She brought Troop 89903 to the school 4 years ago serving grades K-6. The girls meet weekly on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Thurgood Marshall recently received an award for its volunteerism at the Southeast Michigan Girl Scout award ceremony in March 2019.

    Chess Club

Chess is a game played between 2 people on opposite sides of a board containing 64 squares of alternating colors.  Each player has 16 pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and 8 pawns.  The goal of the game is to checkmate the other king. When this happens, the king is in a position to be captured and they cannot escape. The focus of the club is to give students an alternative to playing video games on their tech devices.

Mr. Carter, Assistant Principal, created the club for 8th-grade students because the game teaches strategies and helps them to develop patience.  Students meet daily from 11:52 a.m. until 12:43 p.m. in room 200.  For more information, please contact Mr. Carter at 313.494.8820.

Our ultimate goal is through increased engagement between community and school representatives, we will have the necessary support to significantly enhance the performance of the school.
