Michigan unit of the American String Teachers Association (MASTA) at Michigan State University

Two string quartets from Cass Technical high School participated in the annual state-wide chamber music competition sponsored by the Michigan unit of the American String Teachers Association (MASTA) at Michigan State University. One Cass quartet was selected as the runner-up sharing 2nd place with a quartet from Okemos High School. Groups from Cass Tech have now placed in the competition in 2 out of the last 3 years and having won 1st place, the first year they competed.

National Vocabulary Championship Winner

National Vocabulary ChampionshipsCongratulations to Steven Banks, a 4.0 senior at Renaissance High School, the winner of the National Vocabulary Championship (NVC) Detroit Citywide Championship recently held at Renaissance. The competition is sponsored by the Gameshow Network and the Princeton Review.

Robotics Victory

Congratulations to the combined team of Murray Wright and Western International students who competed as one team and placed second in the world in the first VEX Robotics World Challenge Competition. Look for this ad in the May issue of "African American Family" magazine.

Winterhalter Elementary School

Winterhalter has a successful year at the "Michigan League of Academic Games" State tournament. Academic Games is a series of games designed to test a student's knowledge in several different subject areas. Students compete in games that cover math, english, social studies, & logic. Winterhalter School entered nine events and took six first place trophies and one third.

Martin L. King, Jr. Senior High School

The Martin L. King's King Players' Drama Troupe has succeeded in qualifying for the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association (MIFA) State Competition! Martin L. King is the ONLY Detroit Public School currently competiting in the M.I.F.A. league.

Schulze Elementary

The greatest secret to learning is how to infuse the whole process with joy. This is the concept behind the Academic Games Leagues of America. One can learn anything faster and more deeply if the process is captivating and enjoyable instead of boring, annoying or painful. In Academic Games, students try to outthink each other in the areas of mathematics, language arts and social studies.

Crocket Career Technical Center (CCTC)

On April 26-29, 2006, four advisors: Donyale Tucker, Shannon H. Smith, Meng Yang, & Nellie Graves, took 21 students to the annual Michigan State Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Conference in Traverse City. There they competed in various health related competitive events with students involved in HOSA across the state of Michigan. In addition to winning events, CCTC won the Michigan State HOSA Vice Presidency for the 2006-2007 school year.
