Which Programs Are Available To Homeless Children?

Services the Homeless Unit Provides:

  • Transportation assistance (bus tickets to and from school).
  • School supplies
  • Limited uniforms
  • Parent and staff workshops
  • Community resource referrals and information
  • Advocate for children in homeless situations

*Services are not limited to the above and are based on individualized assessments.

Homeless Children are eligible to participate in the same activities and programs that are offered to other children in the school, including, but not limited too, the following:

  • Before-school and after-school programs
  • Counseling services
  • Free and reduced-price nutrition programs
  • Equal access to appropriate special education programs
  • Head Start and Early childhood programs
  • Transportation services to/from the school of origin
  • Bilingual education programs
  • Gifted and talented programs
  • Vocational education programs
  • School Social Work Services
  • Tutoring and remedial support

The School Social Worker assigned to an individual school is the Liaison between the school and the School Social Work Homeless Unit. The Liaison’s responsibility is to identify homeless students in their building, and to follow-up in obtaining the services and/or programs needed for these students.
