Van Zile Elementary lauded for academic improvement

Van Zile Elementary School is one of 25 schools from as many Michigan public school districts that have been identified by Standard & Poor's School Evaluation Services for significantly narrowing the achievement gap.

Van Zile, which is located on the city’s far eastside, has consistently made AYP in the last three years.

To be recognized by Standard & Poors, schools must:

- Test at least 30 students in each student group being analyzed.

-  Reduce at least one achievement gap between student groups in reading
and math proficiency rates by more than five percentage points.

- Reduce at least one achievement gap between student groups in a grade-level reading test by more than five percentage points from one year to the next, and simultaneously raise that grade- level reading proficiency rate for each student group being assessed. Schools must also demonstrate similar progress in math.

Standard & Poor's is a member of SchoolMatters.com, a project of the National Education Data Partnership. SchoolMatters.com was created to help transform the manner in which education information is used by educators, policymakers, superintendents and parents.

The National Education Data Partnership, which is funded by the Broad Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is a collaboration of the Council of Chief State School Officers, Standard & Poor's School Evaluation Services and the CELT Corporation.
