The Detroit Public Schools District recently won two prestigious awards for excellence and probity in fiscal responsibility and financial reporting.
The District received the Association of School Business Officials International’s Certificate in Financial Reporting for excellence in the preparation and issuance of its financial report for the 2004-05 fiscal year. Representatives of ASBO International praised the District for providing a high quality Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the fiscal year 2004-05. The award is the highest recognition for school district financial operations bestowed by ABSO.
DPS also received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The certificate, which is presented by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, is the highest level of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.
“These awards recognize the hard work of our employees in the District’s finance department,” said William F. Coleman III, superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools. “The awards demonstrate that we take our responsibilities as stewards of the taxpayers’ funds very seriously and that we are scrupulous and fastidious in the execution of our duties.
“I want to congratulate all our employees in the finance department for their hard work. I also wish to congratulate Dori Freelain, our chief financial officer, on these two awards. Her leadership and hard work made it possible. I also wish to salute April Royster, our executive director of accounting. April’s integrity, thoroughness and determination to ensure that every penny of the taxpayer’s money is spent judiciously make her a credit to the accounting and finance profession.”
