Ten DPS schools each received a large bin of books this week as part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority’s Ivy Reading AKAdemy program.
The following schools received books: William J. Beckham Academy, Samuel Gompers Elementary, Bunche Elementary, Blackwell Institute, Coleman A. Young Elementary, Coolidge Elementary, Neinas Elementary, Barbara Jordan Elementary, Beulah Brewer, and Heilmann Middle School.
The books were presented at a special event at the Cobo Convention Center, where the sorority is holding its annual national convention this week. Several students, their parents and some teachers attended. The students in attendance each received a book.
The Ivy Reading AKAdemy is the sorority’s signature program. It is designed to promote reading and writing among elementary school students. Members of the sorority donate used and or new books in drop boxes during their annual convention. The bins are divided up by region and the books are then distributed to selected schools in those regions.
