16 DPS students win Rosa Parks scholarships

Sixteen young men and women representing many DPS high schools have been chosen as 2006 Rosa Parks scholars.

The awards, which were established in 1980 by the Detroit News and the Detroit Public Schools, are for $2,000 each. They are administered by the Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation, whose board selects winners on the basis of community service, financial need and academic achievement. In addition, the Detroit News also awards scholarships annually in Rosa Parks’ name to two aspiring journalists.

In all, 40 metro Detroit high school seniors from a broad spectrum won the Rosa Parks scholarships.

This year’s scholarship winners from the Detroit Public Schools are:

Rebrika Blalock, Detroit Technology High School

Adrienne Carter, Northwestern High School

Ashley Carter, Northwestern High School

Danielle Clayton, Denby High School

Latisha Gladney-Taylor, Davis Aerospace Technical High School

Veronica Grandison, Communication and Media Arts High School

Anthony Head, Jr., Mumford High School

Dana Hill, Mumford High School

Delissa Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School

Angelina Jordan, Renaissance High School

Daryel Peake, Mumford High School

Samuel Williams, Jr., Davis Aerospace Technical High School

Noelle Williams, Renaissance High School

Darryl Woods, Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School

Redell Willis, of Chadsey High School, received the Detroit News Rosa Parks Scholarship. She plans to head to Wayne State University in the fall, where she will major in journalism.
