Sixteen young men and women representing many DPS high schools have been chosen as 2006 Rosa Parks scholars.
The awards, which were established in 1980 by the Detroit News and the Detroit Public Schools, are for $2,000 each. They are administered by the Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation, whose board selects winners on the basis of community service, financial need and academic achievement. In addition, the Detroit News also awards scholarships annually in Rosa Parks’ name to two aspiring journalists.
In all, 40 metro Detroit high school seniors from a broad spectrum won the Rosa Parks scholarships.
