As part of Super Bowl XL, AOL donates computer lab to Hutchins Middle School

February 2, 2006 – Officials of America Online, Inc, the Virginia-based Internet access giant, today formally presented a computer laboratory to Hutchins Middle School.

The lab, which has 30 computers, two laser printers, a projector, a screen,  a plasma television set and work stations, will be known as the Detroit Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology AOL Computer Lab at Hutchins Middle School. AOL also contributed toward the re-furbishing of the lab.

The presentation of the lab was made at the school following an hour-long ceremony in the school’s auditorium that featured actor and TV personality Tom Arnold.  Arnold, who is in Detroit for the Super Bowl, regaled riveted students with stories about his career as a screen star. But he spent just as much time encouraging students to work hard at school work. Using his personal life as an example, he urged the students to steer clear of drugs and other vices. Arnold is hosting a special edition of Sports Bloggers\\\' Live and writing a blog of his activities during Super Bowl week in Detroit.

AOL is title sponsor of the NFL Experience, which takes place through Feb. 5, 2006, at Cobo Center, located in downtown Detroit and is open to the public.

In the weeks leading up to the presentation, representatives from AOL spent several weeks at the school meeting with the teachers to find out what would help make the computer laboratory an ideal academic environment.

\\”We wanted to make this more than a computer lab, we wanted to make it an area that is conducive to learning in a safe and secure environment,\\” said Richard Taylor, Senior Vice President, AOL Brand Marketing. \\”AOL is sponsoring the NFL Experience and we wanted to ensure Detroit students would have a lasting educational benefit from
sharing their city with us.\\”

“We at the Detroit Public Schools are deeply appreciative of this magnanimous gesture on the part of AOL,\\” said William F. Coleman III, superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools. \\”These computers, the high speed laser printers and the other state-of-the-art equipment AOL is pouring in here will keep our students very competitive academically. This is a quintessential example of corporate civic responsibility.\\”
