Deiter Trainable Center Students And Parents 'Go International'

Learning about other cultures teaches children great life lessons.

At the Deiter Trainable Center, to celebrate the wonders of cultural diversity, they chose an international theme for the parent-teacher conferences. Each of 20 classrooms was assigned a different country. In the classroom the teacher helped the children create a display which was made from items borrowed from the Childrens’ Museum or from the child’s own possessions. The teacher also taught the children a craft, dance, song or game along with information about a famous woman from that country. The activity gave parents, teachers and students the opportunity to take a whirlwind tour of 20 different cultures. Each person was given a flag of the ‘country’ they visited, along with having their ‘passport’ stamped to verify the visit. According to principal Joyce M. Boyd, it was a lot of work and it turned out to be a wonderful learning experience for everyone.
