…NBA star, Jalen Rose, a graduate of Detroit Southwestern High School, has donated \$50,000 for five college scholarships to DPS seniors who are college bound this fall.
Rose says “there is no question in my mind that education is the key to a successful future.” The recipients will be selected by Rose and members of his Foundation based on scholarship, community and extracurricular activities and financial need.
University of Michigan student members of Hillel, a Jewish Student’s Service organization and MSA, the Muslim Student Association, collected 1,000 books and donated them to the Bethune Academy to stock the library. The U of M students were welcomed with a small community program, snacks, Certificates of appreciation which were presented to each organization, and of course, many personal thank you’s.
Children also need to know that they should give as well as receive and Christopher Byrd, a 4th grade student at Bethune fully understands the giving concept. He checked with the principal, Mary Brown for permission to pass out flyers and get the other students to help raise money for the Tsunami Relief Organization (TRO). Christopher got the whole school involved and raised $1,350 which was sent to the Dearborn Heights Rotary Club to be forwarded to the TRO.
