When Hutchins Middle School lost it’s art classes, it was a blow to Dr. Virginia Clay, the principal, and the budding young artists at the school.
That’s when Central Detroit Christian (CDC) creative arts instructor, Megan Meyers stepped in and together, Hutchins and CDC brought the art back in the form of an after school arts program under Ms. Meyers’ direction. It is part of the CDC vision of providing opportunity and resources to the Central Detroit community. On Wednesday, May 11, from 6 to 8 p.m., you’ll get to see the works of the teacher and her students in the ‘Pastels in Bloom’ exhibit that will be on display in the school library (8820 Woodrow Wilson). The students’ works cover a wide range of animal subjects portrayed in pastels while Ms. Meyers’ works are pastels portraits of eleven children that illustrate various verses of the 23rd Psalms. Ms. Meyers says she sees herself as more of mentor or a shepherd, guiding her students toward discovering their purpose. All of the pieces of art will be for sale for reasonable prices. The proceeds will help sponsor more enrichment programs for Hutchins students.
