DPS Experts Awarded For Exceptional Asbestos Containment Plan

William F. Coleman, DPS Chief Operating Officer and Dr. Darrell Rodgers, the Executive Director of the Environment Health and Safety Department will accept a most prestigious award presented to the department.

It is being honored by the Michigan School Business Officials with the MSBO 2005 Meridian Award for the Asbestos Management Program which supports the District’s goal of providing clean and safe environments for the students. Virtually all of the Detroit Public schools built before 1980 contained asbestos in some form. The DPS EHS department put a plan in place to remove the material from as many schools as possible, or to permanently contain it when it was not possible to remove it. Since the implementation of the plan, the District has also been required to undergo periodic inspections to assure that the work is still effective. Coleman and Dr. Rodgers will formally accept the award at the MSBO’s Annual Conference on Thursday, April 28th in Grand Rapids. MSBO will also present a $500 check to the District’s scholarship fund along with a plaque acknowledging the award, at a school board meeting in the near future.
