Short Takes….

…..You can become a youth leader or a coach.

All you have to do is learn how, and you can at the next MALES (Men Assuming Leadership and Ensuring Success) seminar that will be held on Wednesday, April 6th in the New Center One Building, 3031 West Grand Blvd. The Workshop lasts from 6 to 8 p.m. Dinner will be served, there’ll be children’s activities and giveaways. Space is limited so reserve yours by calling 313-873-9974.

…..Normally you have to pay to dress ‘up,’ but at the Catherine C. Blackwell Inst., on one special day the students and staff paid to dress ‘down.’ That resulted in a collection of $1,166.50 that they sent to the Red Cross for the Tsunami Relief Fund. The fundraiser was an effort to help the recovery efforts in southeast Asia and Africa. It was also an opportunity to instill in the students the importance of helping the ‘community,’ both near and far away.

…..Students at Thurgood Marshall Elementary were treated to a Book and Blanket Day thanks to the generosity of AllState Insurance. The AllState area vice president and employees passed out either a book or a blanket to each of the 610 students and then spent time reading with the students.

…..For nearly five years, Parker students who are in need haven’t had to wait for Christmas for a gift. Principal Sharon West has put her school funds to good use by giving gifts of books, electronic learning items, and even sometimes just clean, sturdy clothing to students at any time of the year if it will meet a child’s need and help that child stay in school. The school has sold items such as pizza and Frankenmuth candies and sausages to raise money and receives support from the LSCO leadership.
