Short Takes…

…Payless Shoes sent Carstens Elementary School a nice little check for $1,000 big dollars to help support the many school/community projects at Carstens.

And speaking of Carstens activities, they were recently visited by former NFL star, Rick Garza who motivated 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders with his presentation, ‘You’re not a loser…you’re a chooser.’ After the speech, there were pictures and big hugs from the students for Garza.

…For the first time in the 75-year history of the Pop Warner Cheer and Dance Competition, a predominantly Black cheer team represented the Mid-American region in the nationals which were held earlier this month at Disney World. The team is the Detroit Cardinals, 15 girls ranging in age from 10 to 14 from several DPS schools. The girls are coached by Tonya Sanford. They did not make it to the finals in the competition but their ‘eyes are on the prize’ for next year.

…Third place in the AAU competition and 5th place in the Jr. Olympic competition is not bad at all. That’s how the ‘Swift Track Club’ fared in those cross-country meets a few weeks ago. The 10 team members are girls 10 years old or younger. Nine attend Fitzgerald Elementary and one member attends St. Joan of Arc in St.Clair Shores.

…The students and staff at the Bethune Academy took a stand against violent behavior when they held their ‘Just Play Day’ coordinated Communities in Schools at Bethune. The activity included parents and community members who joined the students in activities cooperative games, and lunch. The activity was a demonstration of the school’s role of an island of safety and cooperative learning. ‘Just Play Day’ was sponsored by the United Way Community Services.
