The $80,000 that was raised through many months of fund raising got the project rolling and then more help arrived. Several Detroit area companies chipped in with materials, supplies and assistance that have helped make the dream shared by the members of the Parent Council of the Detroit Open School, a reality.
The PK - 8 learning academy will be the new home of a futuristic, barrier-free Playscape that is designed to enhance outdoor activity for children at the elementary and middle school level. On Saturday, September 25th over 75 volunteers - parents, neighbors, business representatives and the like - will be on site to help with the construction of the play area. The Playscape will feature swings, climbing structures, rings and other leading-edge play elements. This new project is in keeping with the philosophy of the school's principal, Gretchen Pitts-Sykes who firmly believes that healthy bodies lead to healthy minds. If you'd like to take part in the construction, just call Tom Goddeeris at 313-835-9523.
