Move... Check... Mate

Be prepared to lose if you dare to play a game of chess with a member of the Hutchins Middle School Chess Team. They participated in the National Championships this year and did the DPS proud. Thirteen Hutchins students traveled to Tucson, Arizona and finished in 4th place (out of 42 teams) in the under 750 Section and 11th place (out of 45 teams) in the Under 1000 Section. One of the highlights of the competition was the Blitz Tournament. All of the competitors play twelve fast and furious, 5-minute games. For the first time, Hutchins entered a team in the Blitz and finished 15th. The following is an overview of the Hutchins participants and scores:

Under 750 Section Team:
Madina Mathis, Deon Brown, Cedric Davis, Devyne Lloyd

Under 1000 Section Team:
Cody Spearman, Kristen Walker, Dante Dixon, Jeremy Hepburn

Blitz Tournament:
Gerald Dixon, Cody spearman, Dante Dixon, Jarrod Thomas, Madina Mathis, Devyne Lloyd

Special recognition goes to Cody spearman who placed 13th out of 258 students and to Madina Mathis, a first year chess player who finished 37th.

The program continues thanks to the chaperones, school staff and volunteers for raising funds, and of course their coach Douglas Carey.
