It was a conference designed with the female student in mind. The 2nd annual Job-Readiness Conference entitled “Teaching Toward Technology” took place at the University of Detroit Mercy campus and was attended by more than 300 Detroit Public Schools Compact students.

The focus of the conference was on the development, enhancement and awareness of the need to have job-readiness skills. The students spent part of the day engaged in workshops conducted by Basic Technologies, Inc., Strategic Staffing Solutions, and CU@ The Top.

The highlight of the day that brought all the fine points together was the keynote address delivered by the first woman to head the nation’s tenth largest municipal police department, Chief Ella Bully-Cummings.

She encouraged the young ladies to consider non-traditional fields and urged them to remember that “one’s status in life is irrelevant…what really matters is your attitude and commitment.”
