The students at Davison Elementary School were the stars of the show when Micro-Society came to town to shoot a training video at the school.
Davison is one of only four Micro-Society schools in the country with enough history in the program to be used as a training module. The Davison program was established in 1993.
In a micro-society learning setting, the students do everything it takes to create their own society. They determine what type of government they’ll have, set up all businesses and services, determine currency, write laws and enforce them, define jobs, education…every detail that any city has…a micro society has.
Daily, the students ‘live’ the roles that they have chosen which in itself is a unique learning experience. Overall the project helps students become more motivated, to put what they learn to use, become more involved in problem solving, improve attendance and achieve better reading and math test scores.
A Micro Society is a great deal of work but considering the positive changes in behavior and grades, the school staff have learned it is worth it. The videotaping at Davison will be used to create a training tape for teachers in 40 states to learn from. It is the first training tape the organization has produced.
